Leader controls
Teachers are automatically assigned the Leader role during a lesson, giving them additional controls to manage participants. Leader Controls are available from the Leading Mode (Crown) menu.
If you're new to Leading Mode, see Teacher Controls: Leading Mode & Classroom Controls to learn how it works and how to guide students through a lesson.
From the Leading Mode menu, you can manage participant features, control microphones and cameras, change editing permissions, and remove participants when needed.
Manage participant features
Using the Leading Mode menu, you can enable or disable participant features for everyone in the Space.
Each feature can be configured independently. For example, you can disable Reactions while keeping Raise Hand enabled so students can still ask questions.
This is what the screen looks like for students with some permissions disabled:
Manage everyone at once
From the Main Room menu, you can quickly:
Mute all microphones
Stop all videos
Enable or disable editing for everyone in the Space
Note: These controls only apply to the room you're currently in (typically the Main Room unless you're using Breakout Rooms).
Manage individual participants
Open the Participants panel (or open Chat and select People) to manage individual students.
Mute a student
If there's too much background noise from a student, you can mute their microphone. To do this, select the student from the People menu or click the three dots on their video tile, then select Mute Microphone.
Tip: You can also disable the Microphone option from the Leading Mode menu for all students. This prevents students from unmuting themselves.
Ask a student to unmute
If a student is muted, you can send them a request to unmute their microphone. This makes it easy for the student to turn their microphone back on.
You can send this request from the People menu or by clicking the three dots on the student's video tile. Select Ask to Unmute Microphone to send the request.
Note: Due to browser privacy and security restrictions, you can't force a student's microphone to unmute.
Stop receiving student video
You can stop receiving a student's video feed from the Participants panel or the three-dot menu on their video tile.
If you'd like the student to turn their camera back on later, click Ask to Resume Video.
Manage editing permissions
You can control who can edit the Space at any time during a lesson.
Enable or disable editing for everyone
Open the Participants panel (or Chat > People), click the three dots, and select Enable Editing for All or Disable Editing for All.
Alternatively, use the Leading Mode controls to disable Editing (and File Uploads).
This is useful when you want students to focus on your presentation without making changes.
Enable or disable editing for individual students
Select a participant and choose Enable Editing or Disable Editing.
This is useful when you want to allow one student to work on the whiteboard or temporarily prevent a disruptive student from making changes.
Note: For more information about locking content and preventing tabs from being deleted, see Teacher Controls: Leading Mode & Classroom Controls.
Remove participants
Kick out a student
Use Kick Out to remove a participant from the lesson. They can rejoin by refreshing the page, making this useful if a student accidentally joins multiple times or needs to reconnect.
Ban a student
You can permanently ban a participant from a Space if necessary. Banned users can't rejoin until they're removed from the banned users list. When kicking them out, check "Also ban this user..."
To remove a ban, open the Leading Mode (crown) menu, select Manage Banned Users, and click Unban for the participant.
FAQs
Can I allow only one student to edit?
Yes. Disable editing for everyone, then enable editing only for the student you'd like to work in the Space.
Can I force a student to unmute?
No. Browsers don't allow websites to unmute a user's microphone without their permission. You can send a request asking the student to unmute instead.
If you need this behavior changed through the API or a custom integration, please contact us at [email protected].
What's the difference between Kick and Ban?
Kick Out removes a participant temporarily. They can rejoin by refreshing the page. Ban prevents a participant from joining the Space until they're unbanned.
